UNH men's hockey defeats U.S. National U-18 Team, 5-0

DURHAM, N.H. - Mike Ayers (Hingham, Mass.) and Jeff Pietrasiak (Shrewsbury, Mass.) both made 11 saves to lead the University of New Hampshire men's ice hockey team to Saturday night's 5-0 exhibition victory against the U.S. National Under-18 Team at the Whittemore Center.

Ayers, a 2003 All-America Second Team selection and 2003 USA Hockey College Player of the Year, started the game and played through the end of the second period, a stanza in which he made seven saves, then Pietrasiak played the final frame.

The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Tim Horst (South St. Paul, Minn.) at 5:24 and Eddie Caron (Hudson, N.H.) at 17:58. Brett Hemingway (Surrey, B.C.) set up the first tally of the game with a centering pass from the right circle. Horst collected the puck in the slot and fired his shot under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead. Caron extended the lead to 2-0 when he made U.S. Under-18 goaltender Jordan Pearce commit and beat him with a low shot.

Sean Collins (Reading, Mass.), with the assistance of Steve Saviano (Reading, Mass.) and Nathan Martz (Chilliwack, B.C.) scored the only goal of the second period at 10:04.

Eddie Caron (Hudson, N.H.) followed up his own shot to extend UNH's advantage to 4-0 midway through the third period and Preston Callander (Regina, Sask.) scored off a centering pass from Justin Aikins (South Surrey, B.C.) with 8:20 remaining in the game to close the scoring. Brian Yandle (Milton, Mass.) was also credited with an assist on Callander's goal.

Pearce went the distance in net for the U.S. Team, which is now 4-2-0, and was credited with 19 saves.

New Hampshire opens the regular season at home Oct. 11 vs. the University of Vermont. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m.
