UNH WINS BID FOR 2009 AND 2011 NCAA HOCKEY REGIONALS AT THE VERIZON WIRELESS ARENA

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -The NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Committee and the University of New Hampshire have announced today that the 2009 and 2011 NCAA men's ice hockey Northeast Regional will be held at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, N.H.

The four teams will be competing at the Northeast regional with three games on the weekend of March 27-29, 2009 and in 2011 the four teams will play the weekend of March 25-27.

"We are very proud to have the NCAA grant us the Men's Ice Hockey Regionals in 2009 and 2011. This is in keeping with our efforts to be a nationally -recognized athletics entity; the hosting of high profile NCAA championships is important in that endeavor," said UNH athletic director Marty Scarano. "UNH does not take for granted the ability to host these prestigious events and will commit our full resources to doing even better in '09 and '11."

UNH and the Verizon Wireless Arena will host the 2007 NCAA Regional on March 24-25. The winner of the Northeast Regional will advance to the 2007 Frozen Four to be held at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Mo.

The first ever regional hosted by UNH and the Verizon Wireless Arena took place in March 2004, when UNH, Boston College, Michigan and Niagara played for the Northeast Regional championship.

The University of New Hampshire men's hockey team will play two regular season contests at the Verizon Wireless Arena in 2005-2006. On Tuesday, November 1 the Wildcats face off against conference rival Boston College presented by Citizens Bank and on Saturday, January 14, the 'Cats take on intrastate rival Dartmouth College in the fifth annual "Battle for the RiverStone Cup." The first college hockey game at the Verizon Wireless Arena was played in 2001-2002 between UNH and Dartmouth on Thursday, December 13, 2001, UNH defeated the Big Green, 6-3.
