ORONO, Maine-The No. 7 ranked University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was shutout by No. 9 ranked University of Maine, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena.
Maine (6-5-0 overall, 2-2-0 HE) sealed the game with an empty-net goal by sophomore forward Brent Shepheard with 1:19 left in the game. Shepheard's second goal of the game was setup by Jon Jankus, picking up his second assist of the game.
The Black Bears took a 2-0 lead on a goal by junior forward Greg Moore with 12:45 remaining in the game. Billy Ryan and Derek Damon earned helpers on Moore's sixth goal of the season.
Maine got onto the scoreboard first at 8:56 of the first period on a goal by Shepheard, his third goal of the season. Freshman forward Keenan Hopson and Jankus were credited with assists on the Shepheard tally.
The teams went scoreless in the second period, but Maine lost junior goaltender Jimmy Howard to injury with 4:16 remaining in the second frame, after making a spectacular save on senior forward Sean Collins (Reading, Mass.). Howard stopped all 10 shots he faced, while freshman Matt Lundin replaced Howard and stopped all four shots by the Wildcats in the final four minutes of the period. UNH outshot the Black Bears, 10-3 in a penalty filled second period (10 penalties).
Junior goaltender Jeff Pietrasiak (Shrewsbury, Mass.) played well for the Wildcats stopping 24 shots for the Wildcats, while Lundin finished the game with 14 saves for the Black Bears. Pietrasiak made eight stops in the first period and a game-high 10 in the third period.
UNH has not won a game at Alfond Arena since Jan. 8, 2000 (5-4), since that contest Maine owns a 6-0-1 record in six games against the 'Cats in Orono.
The Wildcats (4-2-1 overall, 1-1-0) return home for their next game on Friday, Nov. 12 against Providence College. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Whittemore Center. The game will be broadcast live by New Hampshire Public Television.
