WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Freshman forward James vanRiemsdyk (Middletown, N.J.) of the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team was named Pro Ambitions Hockey East Rookie of the Week for the first time this season. The announcement was made Monday by the league office.
vanRiemsdyk made his return from the Junior World Championships a memorable one, tallying two goals and two assists in a weekend home-and-home sweep of No. 5 Massachusetts. After missing five games for the Wildcats, vanRiemsdyk, who has the championship’s leading scorer (5g, 6a), picked up where he left off with a goal and an assist on Friday night. He scored UNH’s first goal and added a helper on Jerry Pollastrone’s game-tying goal. The win marked the first time the Minutemen had been defeated at home this season. On Saturday night, vanRiemsdyk once again registered a goal and an assist. He scored UNH’s third goal of the game, a 4x4 goal, that shifted momentum back to UNH and also had a hand in Bobby Butler’s goal, the fifth goal of the game. vanRiemsdyk helped the Wildcats capture the season series with UMass and hand the Minutemen back to back losses for the first time this season.
The No. 5-ranked Wildcats (13-6-1) return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 (7 p.m.) when they compete in the seventh annual Battle for the RiverStone against in-state rival Dartmouth College at Verizon Wireless Arena. The game will be broadcast by WMUR-TV.
