Wildcats Sweep Hockey East’s Weekly Awards; Sislo, Di Girolamo, Goumas and Team Honored
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – The 11th-ranked University of New Hampshire men's hockey team swept this week's Hockey East honors. Senior forward Mike Sislo (Superior, Wis.), junior netminder Matt Di Girolamo (Ambler, Pa.) and freshman forward Kevin Goumas (Lake Worth, Fla.) were named Hockey East Player, Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively. In addition, the 'Cats by virtue of its upset win over top-seeded Miami and trip to the NCAA regional finals were named the league's Team of the Week. The announcements were made Monday by the league office.
Sislo was named to the All-Tournament team at the NCAA Northeast Regional in Manchester, N.H. Sislo scored goals in each of UNH's games over the weekend. He netted the game-winning goal on Saturday against top-seeded Miami and potted the team's lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Notre Dame on Sunday.
Di Girolamo stopped 57-of-60 shots (.950 save percentage) this weekend at the NCAA Northeast Regional. He turned away 21 shots in a 3-1 win over Miami on Saturday and stopped 36 shots on Sunday against Notre Dame. Di Girolamo, who finished as the program's single-season saves record holder with 1,145 saves, held a 1.50 GAA over the weekend.
Goumas had his first multiple-goal game with two goals in a 3-1 win against Miami. He scored UNH's first goal to lift the Wildcats into a 1-1 first-period tie and potted an empty-net goal with 1:25 remaining in the third period to secure the victory. He tallied nine shots on net and was a +1.
UNH became the only team in the nation with wins in the NCAA's in each of the last three seasons by upsetting top-seeded Miami, 3-1, on Saturday. The Wildcats lost to Notre Dame, 2-1, in the finals on Sunday.
Overall, New Hampshire finished the 2010-11 season with a 22-11-6 mark and qualified for the NCAA's for the 10th-straight season.
