Grayson Downing Earns Hockey East Player of the Week; UNH Named Hockey East’s Team of the Week

DURHAM, N.H. -- Sophomore forward Grayson Downing (Abbottsford, British Columbia) of the top-ranked University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was named Hockey East Athletic Republic co-Player of the Week. In addition, the Wildcats claimed Hockey East's Team of the Week honors for the third-straight week. The announcements were made Monday by the league office. This is the first time Downing has been named Hockey East Player of the Week, he shared this award with Evan Rodrigues of Boston University. Downing becomes the second Wildcat in as many weeks to take home this award, following Kevin Goumas last week.

Downing tallied two goals and two assists in a weekend sweep over UMass.-Lowell. The sophomore forward had five shots on net and was a +5 on the weekend. His two goals came in a 5-2 victory Friday in Durham. He followed that up with a pair of assists Saturday night in Lowell. Downing has seven points on five goals and two assists in the last three games, including his first career hat trick in Denver last weekend.

UNH captured its third team of the week honors and jumped to number one in the nation's poll thanks to a four point weekend against UMass Lowell. The Wildcats skated to a pair of 5-2 victories on Friday and Saturday in a home-and-home series. The Wildcats came out of the weekend with a season sweep of the River Hawks, outscoring UMass Lowell 13-4 in three matchups this year. The team is 7-0-1 in the last eight games and boasts its best start in program history with an 11-1-2 mark.

Downing and the Wildcats play at home against the seventh-ranked Boston University Terriers on Thursday, Dec. 6 (7 p.m.). The Wildcats wrap up the first half of their season at the Whittemore Center Sunday, Dec. 9 (4 p.m.) when they play the US Under-18 Team in an exhibition matchup.
