DURHAM, N.H.  – The University of New Hampshire ski team, coming off a fourth-place finish in last weekend’s season opener at the St. Michael’s Carnival, will compete at home this weekend in the University of New Hampshire Carnival on Jan. 26-27. The Nordic competition will be held at Jackson XC (Jackson, N.H.) and the alpine events will be held at Attitash (Bartlet, N.H.).
    Friday’s alpine schedule features the giant slalom discipline and the women’s first run commences at 9:30 a.m. and the men’s first run follows at 10:30. The women’s second run begins at 1 p.m. and the men will once again start one hour later.
    Also on Friday is the freestyle race in the Nordic competition. The men’s 10K race begins at 9:30 a.m. and will be followed by the women’s 5K race at 11:30. UNH’s Sarah Wright (Wyoming, Minn.) earned a top-10 finish (fifth place) in last weekend’s women’s race and Rody Lageson (St. Paul, Minn.) had a top-10 finish (seventh) for the men.
    In the second day of competition, the men’s 20K classic race gets underway at 11:30 a.m. and is preceded by the women’s 15K classic race at 9:30.
    Back at Attitash on Saturday, the first run for the men’s slalom will be at 9:30 a.m. and the women’s first run is scheduled for 10:40. The men return to the slopes at 12:45 p.m. and the women conclude the weekend’s competition with a second run start time of 1:45.
    The Wildcats excelled in last week’s slalom competition. Led by a first-place finish by Veronique Archambault-Leger (Montreal, Quebec), the ‘Cats captured four top-10 finishes. Willie Ford (Plymouth, N.H.) and Joe Dunn (Stockbridge, Vt.) led the men’s charge in third and fourth place, respectively.
    UNH is also the host of the 2007 NCAA Skiing Championship, which will be held March 7-10 at Jackson XC and Attitash.
