Vt. – Sean McNamara (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and Willie Ford (Plymouth, N.H.) recorded top-5 finishes Saturday to lead the University of New Hampshire ski team to a first-place finish in the men’s slalom and second place overall through two days of competition at the UVM Winter Carnival, which concludes Sunday.

UNH, which led after Day 1, has a total of 611 points. Dartmouth leads with 692 points while the University of Vermont (570.5), Middlebury College (537.5) and Williams College (488) round out the top five in the standings.

The men’s alpine team has recorded the highest team score in both the slalom and giant slalom at all three EISA winter carnivals this season. They tallied 118 points on Saturday.

McNamara, who placed fourth in Friday’s giant slalom, recorded the second-fastest run in Saturday’s slalom race at Mt. Mansfield with a time of 05.53 seconds, and he held on to that position following a second run of 54.66 for an overall mark of 1:45.19.

Ford, third in the GS, took fourth place the slalom by skiing the slope in 51.67 and 53.77 for an overall time of 1:45.44.

Paul Atkinson (Toronto, Ontario) gave the ‘Cats three top-10 finishers, as his mark of 1:46.91 was 10th-best of the day. Ethan Weibrecht (Lake Placid, N.Y.) finished just .02-of-a-second behind Atkinson and in 12th place overall.

The women’s alpine contingent placed four skiers in the top 13 overall and recorded the second-highest team score with 94 points. Aileen Farrell (Ottawa, Ontario) recorded her second top-10 finish in as many days with her seventh-place effort in the slalom. She completed the first run in 1:00.27 and the second in 58.86 for an aggregate time of 1:59.13.
Cynthia Tessier (Rawdon, Quebec) raced to times of 1:01.54 and 58.85 for 10th place in 2:00.39 and Aliza Aylward (Warren,Vt.) placed immediately behind Tessier at 2:01.00. Emily Capaul (Campton, N.H.) took 13th place with a time of 2:01.56.

The UNH women’s Nordic squad tallied 92.5 points in the 5K freestyle race, which ranked fourth overall. Sarah Wright (Wyoming, Minn.) led the charge at the Trapp Family Lodge in seventh place with a time of 15:24.1. Marlijne Cook (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) crossed the finish line in 15:43.0 to take 10th place and Natasha Kullas (Timmins, Ontario) completed the course in 15:47.3 for 12th place. Katie Miller (Lenox, Mass.) did not score for the ‘Cats despite her top-20 finish – 17th place in 16:02.8.

Dylan McGuffin (Concord, N.H.) was the 11th men’s skier to complete the 10K freestyle race with a time of 27:24.5. Harrison Harb (Contoocook, N.H.; 23rd place; 28:04.7) and Michael Lessard (Greene, Maine; 25th; 28:10.9) rounded out the UNH scoring.
