UNH Men's Soccer Defeats Central Connecticut

Burlington, VT-- Junior Adam Purcell (Barrington, RI) scored two goats and added an assist to lead the University of New Hampshire (3-1-0) past Central Connecticut State University (1-2-0), 3-1, on the first day of the Smith Barney Soccer Classic hosted by the University of Vermont.

The Blue Devils and Wildcats. played through 60 scoreless minutes, until Purcell took advantage of a misplayed ball back to the Central Connecticut goalkeeper by a CCSU defender. Purcell intercepted the pass back and slotted the ball past the Blue Devil's keeper, Michael Hurczyn for the first goal of the game. Purcell tallied his second goal five minutes later, accepting a through ball from teammate Zach Zeldner (Glastonbury, CT) and finishing it off from eight yards out. Senior Jay Heimgartner (Wethersfield, CT) completed the scoring for the Wildcats with a blast form eight yards out into the lower left corner of the net.

Central Connecticut was able to avoid the shutout when the Wildcats failed to clear the ball from their defensive end. Senior Sean Duzant capitalized on the opportunity, netting a goal with just two minutes remaining in the contest.

The Smith Barney Soccer Classic will continue tomorrow at Centennial Field on the campus of the University of Vermont UNH will play New Mexico at noon, while Central Connecticut will take on host,Verrnont at 2:00 pm to wrap up the tournament.
