DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire men's soccer team will host the University of Rhode Island Rams in a preseason scrimmage at Lewis Field Saturday, August 26 at 2 p.m. The game is open to the public at no admission charge.
The Wildcats return 17 players and six starters from a squad that went 6-11-1 last season and 2-6-1 in America East. New Hampshire is led by the reigning America East Player of the Year and All-America candidate senior forward Adam Purcell (Barrington, R.I.). Last season Purcell was among the national leaders in goals scored with 21 tallies and a total of 44 points. Other top returnees for the 'Cats include senior Drew Ferrigno (Springfield, Mass.) and junior Andy Karam (Schenectady, N.Y.) who missed the 1999 campaign with a broken leg.
The Rams enter 2000 ranked at No. 25 in the preseason NSCAA poll. Last season URI led the nation in scoring, tallying 76 goals and 72 assists while allowing just 16 goals. The Rams are led by 1999 third-team All-American Nicholas McCreath (Kingston, Jamaica). McCreath recorded 58 points (21 goals, 16 assists) in leading the Rams to a 17-4-1 mark and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season.
UNH kicks off the regular season next weekend (September 2-3) when it hosts the 11th annual Nike Fall Soccer Classic. The Wildcats will be in action along with Penn State, St. Bonaventure and Vermont.
