AMHERST, Mass. - Josh Hareld (North Kingstown, R.I.) netted a goal with just under 11 minutes remaining to give the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Massachusetts Wednesday afternoon at Rudd Field.
With the win, the Wildcats, ranked seventh in New England this week, snap a two game losing skid and improve to 5-2-0, while the Minutemen fall to 2-4-0 on the season.
Hareld, who netted two gamewinners last season, broke a scoreless tie with his goal at the 79:15 mark. The goal was set up on an assist by freshman Eric Masi (York, Maine) who registered his first career point. The goal was also the first of the season for Hareld.
Mike Vignola (Hudson, N.H.) registered his second shutout of the season by turning away four UMass shots. Colin Burns made one save for the Minutemen.
New Hampshire notched the win despite being outshot by the hosts 18-6, including a 12-2 shot advantage in the second half.
UNH is back in action next Wednesday (Sept. 25) when they travel to Providence College for a 4:00 p.m. match. The next Wildcat home game is October 5, when UNH takes on Northeastern in a 2:00 p.m. game at Lewis Field.
