BURLINGTON, Vt. - The No. 8 University of North Carolina men's soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over the University of New Hampshire in first round action at the Smith Barney Classic hosted by the University of Vermont at Centennial Field Friday afternoon. The Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season and now stand at 2-1 on the year, while the Tar Heels improved to 3-0.
North Carolina got on the board just 1:58 in when Sean McGinty scored off a corner kick, with Tim Merritt and Ray Fumo assisting. Marcus Storey gave Carolina a 2-0 lead at the 33:15 mark, while Ted Odgers closed out the scoring for UNC with his 25-yard blast in the 59th minute.
UNH goalkeeper Brian Levey (Pittsburgh, Pa.) turned away three shots. Ford Williams made four saves en route to the shutout. North Carolina outshot New Hampshire 19-11 for the contest.
UNH, the two-time defending champion of the Smith Barney Classic, saw its six-game winning streak in the tournament snapped. The 'Cats had not lost in Vermont's annual tourney since 1999, when they lost to New Mexico in second round action.
UNH continues in the Smith Barney Classic Sunday when it faces Vanderbilt in an 11:00 am game. The next Wildcat home game is September 27, when UNH hosts Massachusetts in a 4:00 game. That game is scheduled to be played at Bremner Field, UNH's new AstroPlay field.
