Sanford's first career goal give 'Cats first win of the season

DURHAM, N.H. - Sophomore midfielder Geoff Sanford (Johnson City, N.Y.) headed in the game's lone goal in the 75th minute to lift the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Colgate University on Saturday night at UNH's Bremner field. It was the first win of the season for the Wildcats, who now stand at 1-1-3 on the season while the Raiders drop to 3-2-0.

Sanford's goal, which was registered officially at 74:21, came off a centering pass from the right side from sophomore forward Ross Fishbain (Racine, Wisc.). Sanford headed the ball to the upper right corner past Colgate goalkeeper Josh Cohen, who finished with two saves. For Sanford it is his first goal and point registered at UNH. For Fishbain the assist is his third point of the season.

Colgate had several chances in the final 15 minutes to tie the game with the best attempt coming from Peter Bourquin, who's shot from 25 yards out was turned away by sophomore goalie Brian Levey (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who finished with four saves.

Levey, who posts his second shutout in four starts, improves to 1-1-2 this season allowing just three goals in 400 minutes of play this season.

UNH travels to Massachusetts on Wednesday, Sept. 22. Game time in Amherst, Mass. is slated for 3:30 p.m. The 'Cats open America East play on Saturday Sept. 25 when they plays host to Maine for a 1:00 p.m. game at UNH's Lewis Field.
