BOSTON - By helping the UNH Wildcat men's soccer team shut out Binghamton in the first round of the 2004 America East Conference Tournament, sophomore defenseman Matt Shump (Durham, N.H.) was named to the All-Tournament Team after the conclusion of the championships.
Shump's leadership on the back line helped the Wildcats force a penalty kick shootout with the Bearcats after the two teams played to a scoreless tie in regulation and two overtime periods. It was a continuation of the team's play in the regular season, as the Wildcats finished 2004 with a goals against average of 0.97.
In 2004, Shump played in 16 of the team's 18 matches, always anchoring the defense. Shump has been a major presence in the UNH lineup since the 2003 season, when he played in 16 matches and was awarded the Walter Weiland Award for being the Wildcats' most dedicated player.
Expected to return 16 letterwinners from the 2004 team, the Wildcats will look to improve on their sixth-place conference finish and advance further in the postseason tournament in 2005.
