BIG GREEN DEFEAT UNH IN SOCCER BATTLE OF GRANITE STATE

DURHAM, N.H. - Dartmouth College senior Darnell Nance scored two goals early in the first half as the Big Green started the match quickly and kept up the pressure in a 2-0 victory over the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team in a non-conference match Wednesday night at Bremner Field.

P.J. Scheufele set up Nance's first goal on a free kick at the 10:25 mark. Scheufele, a senior midfielder, sent the ball into the box, and Nance, from the middle of the field, sent a shot from about seven yards out into the lower right corner of the net to give the visitors the early lead.

Just over a minute later, Dartmouth (8-2-4) gained possession in its own end, and senior defender Peter Savidis sent a long pass into the UNH defensive zone. The ball found Nance's head, and he flicked a shot past UNH goalie Brian Levey (Pittsburgh, Pa.) into the left side of the net for his fourth goal of the season at the 11:38 mark.

The Wildcats played a sluggish first half, earning only three shots and one corner kick while the Big Green controlled play and notched five first-half shots. UNH picked up the pace in the second half, forcing five corner kicks and outshooting Dartmouth 6-4, but never really threatened to close the gap.

Dartmouth goalie Rowan Anders made five saves to earn his seventh shutout of the season. Levey picked up three saves for the Wildcats. UNH finished with nine total shots, led by John Bergqvist (Hollviken, Sweden) and Derek Bragg (Downingtown, Pa.) with two shots each.

New Hampshire (8-5-3) will have a week to prepare for its regular season finale against the Hartford Hawks next Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m. at Lewis Field. Before the match, seniors Chris Bennice (Scotia, N.Y.), Jonathan Burg (New Milford, Conn.), Michael Card (Amherst, N.H.), and Eric Masi (York, Maine) will be recognized for their contributions to the UNH program.
