Amherst, Mass. – Chris Banks (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) scored the game’s lone goal in the 54th minute to push the University of New Hampshire men’s soccer team past the University of Massachusetts, 1-0, during Wednesday’s match at Rudd Field.
    New Hampshire improves to 5-2-2 overall while Massachusetts drops to 6-2-1. Massachusetts was ranked as high as 22 in the nation before recording two straight losses to Vermont and New Hampshire.
    New Hampshire outshot the Minutemen 5-0 in the first half until the second half when the Minutemen lead 6-3 in total shots.
Banks’ goal came when defensive back Matt Shump (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) passed the ball to midfielder Scott Rowling (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South).  Rowling dribbled and passed it back up to Shump who then tipped it to Banks who was waiting in front of the net around the 16-yard line.  Banks drilled the ball into the right corner of the net for the score.
    It was Banks’ sixth goal and only the third goal let up by Massachusetts goalkeeper Zack Zimmons on the season.
    New Hampshire begins conference play at Vermont on September 23 at 1 p.m.
