THOMPSON DIRECTS SEACOAST UNITED TO ANOTHER TITLE
DURHAM, N.H.- University of New Hampshire men’s soccer head coach Rob Thompson has directed his Seacoast United U-17 boys premier team to the 2007 New Hampshire state championship and a United States Youth Soccer Association (USYSA) Region 1 championship berth. Seacoast United knocked off the reigning state champs, Phantoms FC Stars, with a convincing 1-0 win at the Northeast Athletic Fields in Pembroke, N.H. on Sunday, June 3. The Region 1 championship will be decided June 29-July 3 in Portland, Maine. Region 1 is represented by the state champions from Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

Thompson has coached at SUSC since 1993 and is the second longest serving coach, behind Paul Willis, at the club. Over the last 11 years, Thompson has coached six different Seacoast United teams to nine USYSA state titles and three United Soccer Leagues (USL) Super Y national championship berths.  His 2001 U-16 boys’ team finished fourth at the Super Y League inaugural national championship.

This is his first season with the current U-17 premier team and the 2007 state title caps an impressive coaching spell since last year. In 2006, Thompson led his SUSC U-17 boys team to arguably the best run in New Hampshire youth soccer history. Last year’s Seacoast United U-17 boys advanced to the USYSA Region I Final, the USL Super Y League national final, and finished with a No. 8 national ranking. Thompson then led UNH to a 12-5-3 finish to garner America East Coach of the Year honors. Three Seacoast United players are set to join UNH this fall to continue their careers under Thompson’s tutelage.
