.- Alex Elliot tallied a goal and an assist, leading the University of Portland men’s soccer team past the University of New Hampshire, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Merlo Field. With the non-conference loss, the Wildcats are now 0-1-1 on the season.

In the 30th minute of play Portland’s Collen Warner recorded the first goal of the game. The shot, from eight yards out, was deflected in net off the cross bar. New Hampshire’s lone shot of the first period came from senior Derek Bragg (Downingtown, Pa.).

The Pilots extended its lead to 2-0 with a goal by Alex Elliot just over 10 minutes into the second half of action. Elliot fired a shot from the right side which crossed the box, beating Wildcat goalkeeper Mike Jenne (Vernon, N.Y.) left side. Portland increased the deficit to three goals in the 69th minute with a goal by Ryan Luke, in which Elliot earned the assist.

Less than three minutes after the Pilots third goal, Bragg countered with a shot on net, but the ball fired high off the crossbar. Freshman Dylan George (Bangor, Maine), who entered the game in the 74th minute, recorded the Wildcats third shot on goal in the 79th minute.

Jenne faced five shots, recording two saves in 78 minutes of action. With 12 minutes remaining in the game, Wildcat freshman Colin O’Donnell (Springfield, Mass.) relieved Jenne in net. O’Donnell did not face a shot in his collegiate debut.

The Wildcats return East to face Michigan State on Fri., Sept. 7 and Massachusetts on Sun., Sept. 9 at Vermont’s 17th annual Smith Barney Nike Soccer Classic. The home-opener is Friday, Sept. 14, in which the Wildcats will host Central Connecticut State University as part of the Nike Fall Classic. Kickoff on Lewis Field is 5 p.m.
