DURHAM, N.H.- Chris Banks (Westborough, Mass.) kept an eleven-year unbeaten streak alive, as he tallied the lone goal to lift the Wildcats to a 1-0 America East victory over rival Maine on Wednesday afternoon at Lewis Fields.
The win is New Hampshire’s first America East conference win of the season. New Hampshire breaks a two-game losing skid and improves to 6-2-2 and 1-1-0 in conference play. Maine drops to 3-5-2 overall and 0-2-0 in America East play.
Banks, who now leads the team with six goals on the season, received the ball from Sean Coleman (Stratham, N.H.), who was on the forward move. Coleman, who earned the assist on the play, chipped the ball ahead to Banks, who then charged past two defenders and Maine goalkeeper Nemanja Kostic to find the low right corner of the net at 59:16.
Led by Banks with five shots and Kyle Urso (Lombard, Ill.) with three, New Hampshire outshot its opponent 15-10. Black Bear Alex Rickett, with four shots, had the majority of Maine’s scoring chances, including two on net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Colin O’Donnell (Springfield, Mass.) posted four saves in the game to preserve the shutout, his third of the season for the Wildcats. O’Donnell made two in the first period to keep the visitors from gaining an edge. He kept up his stellar play in the second half, as he made two in the final 12 minutes to preserve the win. Kostic tallied four saves in the loss for the Black Bears.
The America East "Man of the Match" was awarded to Urso for UNH and Kostic for Maine.
The Wildcats continue their homestead when they host Albany on Saturday, Oct. 11.
