BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of New Hampshire men's soccer squad shutout Central Connecticut State University in its final game of the Smith Barney Classic held at the University of Vermont. The win improves the Wildcats to 3-2-1 on the season while the Blue Devils fall to 1-3.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute when Alex Hussein (Haverhill, Mass.) scored on a header. The play originated with a Jordan Thomas (Mohnton, Pa.) free kick into the box. Hussein was able to connect with the set piece and find the back of the net. The goal was Hussein's first of the year.
In the second half, the Wildcats extended their lead when freshman Angel Maldonado (Lennox, Calif.) tallied the first goal of his young career in the 61st minute. Maldonado notched the tally after Paul Bianchi (Essex, Vt.) took the initial shot that Blue Devil keeper Anthony Occhialini saved, however could not hold onto the ball. At the end of the game, the Wildcats prevailed, 2-0.
UNH goalie Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa.) tallied his third shutout of the season after defending the four shots that were sent on net by CCSU. The Blue Devils notched a total of 10 shots on the day. New Hampshire capitalized on two of its six shots on net while totaling 12 shots on the day.
