BOSTON – Sophomore Matthew Guarente (Saugus, Mass.) won an individual title to lead the University of New Hampshire men's track & field team to a fifth-place finish on the final day of the America East Championships at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center on Saturday.
With 84 points, the Wildcats finished behind the University at Albany (184), Binghamton University (157), Boston U. (141) and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (107), but ahead of the University of Maine (62), the University of Vermont (24), the University of Hartford (16) and Stony Brook University (5).
Guarente captured the high jump title with an IC4A Championship-qualifying leap of six feet, 8.25 inches.
Sophomore Cameron Lyle (Plaistow, N.H.), who placed fourth in the weight throw with an IC4A-qualifying toss of 55-3.75 on Friday, finished second in the shot put with a throw of 50-3.25. Classmate Chris Dupuis (Plaistow, N.H.) was sixth with a mark of 47-0.75.
Senior Tyler Dinnan (Juneau, Alaska) placed third in the mile in an IC4A-qualifying time of four minutes, 7.16 seconds.
Senior Anthony Vorachak (Lebanon, N.H.) finished fourth in the heptathlon with 4,754 points.
In the 800 meters, juniors Bill Godfrey (Merrimack, N.H.) and Sean Mitchell (Milford, Mass.) placed fifth and eighth, respectively in IC4A-qualifying times of 1:53.37 and 1:53.99.
In the 1,000 meters, junior Jake McDougle (Walpole, N.H.) and freshman Kevin Greene finished fifth and eighth, respectively, in IC4A-qualifing times of 2:27.69 and 2:28.58.
Senior Alex Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who qualified ninth in the 400 meter prelims in a time of 49.73 on Friday, placed seventh in the final in a time of 50.17.
Freshman Joseph Jourdain (Hudson, N.H.) finished eighth in the 3,000 meters in an IC4A-qualifying time of 8:24.54.
Sophomore Chris Houston (Harrisburg, Pa.), who qualified ninth in the 60 meter preliminaries in a time of 7.05 on Friday, placed ninth in the final in a time of 7.21.
The 4x800-meter relay team of Greene, senior Josh Kearns (Ridgefield, Conn.), Dinnan and McDougle placed second in an IC4A-qualifying time of 7:37.09. The 4x400 squad of Mitchell, Godfrey and freshmen Sheehan Michael (Durham, Conn.) and Jake Critelli (Southbury, Conn.) was fifth in a time of 3:20.45.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25-26 at the New England Championships at the Track & Tennis Center.
