Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Competes at Wildcat Invitational II

DURHAM, N.H. – Graduate student Paul DeTurk (Durham, N.H.), senior Mike Simon (Durham, Conn.), junior Max Hoddwells (Wayne, Maine) and sophomore Matthew Guarente (Saugus, Mass.) each won an event for the second-straight week as the University of New Hampshire men's track & field team played host to the Wildcat Invitational II on Saturday at the Reggie F. Atkins Track.

The University of Maine, Colby Sawyer, Bowdoin and New England College also took part in the non-scoring meet.  

In the field, Hoddwells won the long jump with a leap of 6.26m while freshman Christopher Dunleavy (Epping, N.H.) came in at sixth with a mark of 5.75m. Dunleavy also added a fifth-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 11.27m. 

DeTurk won the hammer throw with a toss of 59.03m while John Randall (Boscawen, N.H.), Chris Dupuis (Plaistow, N.H.) and Michael Couturier (Dover, N.H.) finished fourth through sixth, respectively, with marks of 53.05m, 52.62m and 51.92m. 

Simon won the javelin for the second time in as many weeks with a throw of 64.19m. Freshmen Jacob McCabe (Amherst, N.H.) and Jesse Swink and senior Matthew Pelchat (Lancaster, N.H.) placed third through fifth, respectively, with marks of 54.09m, 53.05m and 51.09m.

In the high jump, Guarente and fellow sophomore Jason Guarente (Saugus, Mass.) placed first and second, respectively, with leaps of 1.98m and 1.93m.

On the track, graduate student Tyler Dinnan (Juneau, Alaska) won the 1500m with a time of 3:58.19, edging out senior teammate Joshua Kearns (Ridgefield, Conn.) who placed second in a time 3:59.63. Junior Alexander Beaulieu (Merrimack, N.H.) and freshman David Gervais (Nashua, N.H.) took fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 4:01.34 and 4:03.64.

Freshman Kevin Greene also picked up a win on the track, finishing first in the 800m in one minute, 56.74 seconds. Freshman Eric Stys (Stittville, N.Y.), senior Peter Carignan (Nashua, N.H.) and freshman Ethan Dionne (Westerly, R.I.) followed in second, fifth and sixth, respectively in times of 1:59.97, 2:03.66 and 2:03.73.

Senior Alexander MacLeod (East Longmeadow, Mass.) captured first in the 400m hurdles as he crossed the finish line in a time of 55.25, while Sheehan Michael (Durham, Conn.) and Renrick Pesce (New Hartford, Conn.) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in times of 59.99 and 1:00.38.

Sophomore Mike Marshall (Salem, N.H.) placed second in the 110m hurdles in a time of 14.94.

In the 100m, freshman Eric Guinto (Derry, N.H.) and senior Wesley Cotnoir (Auburn, N.H.) placed third and sixth, respectively, in times of 11.27 and 11.53.

Senior Gabe Dano (Merrimack, N.H.) picked up a third place finish in the 200m in a time of 22.74.

Freshman Steve Souza (Fall River, Mass.) finished fourth in the 400m in a time of 52.24, while freshman Louis Saviano (New Hampstead, Mass.) placed fifth in the 5000m in a time of 16:04.37.

Back in the field, Glen Ruggerio tied for a third-place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 3.50m.

In the shot put, sophomores Dupuis and Cameron Lyle (Plaistow, N.H.) and Randall placed fourth through sixth, respectively, with throws of 46-11.0, 46-10.75 and 46-1.25. Randall also finished third in the discus with a throw of 40.18m.

The Wildcats return to action on April 20-21 at the Holy Cross Heptathlon.
