BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – University of New Hampshire men's track & field freshman John Prizzi (Wycoff, N.J.) placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the USATF Junior National Championships over the weekend on the campus of Indiana University.
Prizzi finished fourth in the 20-runner field with a time of 9:25.52, coming in just behind Arizona State's Daniel Wong, who finished in a time of 9:24.91. Darren Fahy, who ran unattached, won the event in a time of 9:06.83, while Princeton's Edward Owens took second at 9:13.08.
Prizzi qualified for the meet at the America East Championships after he finished fifth overall in a time of 9:10.68. The New Jersey native enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign as he also placed fourth in the 1,500 meters at the New England Championships.
The Junior Nationals serve as a qualifier for the IAAF World Junior Championships. The top-two performers will be part of the American team that will compete in Barcelona, Spain from July 10th to July 15th.
The UNH men's and women's teams have sent qualifiers to Junior Nationals in five of the last six years. In the past, junior Rosemary Read (West Greenwich, R.I.) and sophomore Joseph Jourdain (Hudson, N.H.) have both competed at the USA Junior National meet.
