DURHAM, N.H. - Junior Anna Matthias (Guilford, Conn.) had career highs of 23 points and nine rebounds, while senior Kim Kassik (Kitchener, Ontario) had 17 points to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to a 67-57 victory over Brown University here at Lundholm Gymnasium this evening. The game marked the season opener for both schools.
Freshman Maren Matthias (Guilford, Conn.) had a sparkling collegiate debut for the 'Cats, scoring 10 points, grabbing eight boards and blocking six shots. The six blocked shots ties a school record held by Denise Higgins and Rita McCarroll. Barbara Maloni had a game-high 29 points for the Bears.
UNH had a 32-29 lead at the half. The game was fairly close throughout the half, but the 'Cats used a 12-2 run capped by a pair of Anna Matthias free throws to take a 30-18 lead with 2:23 left in the half. Brown would then go on its' own 11-2 run capped by a Maloni basket as time expired to close within three at the half.
New Hampshire gradually extended the lead, pushing it to 11 when Anna Matthias hit a pair of free throws with 10:46 remaining. The elder Matthias was 13-for-16 at the line for the game. The Bears would cut the lead to eight several times but could get no closer the rest of the way.
New Hampshire returns to action next Tuesday (11/21) when it travels to Worcester, Mass. to face the Crusaders of Holy Cross. Game time is 7 p.m. The next Wildcat home game is Saturday, November 25 when they face intra-state rival Dartmouth in a 1 p.m. game at Lundholm Gym.
