WORCESTER, Mass. -- The University of New Hampshire women's basketball team fell to Holy Cross 87-60 in action here at the Hart Center this evening. UNH now stands at 1-1, while the Crusaders improve to 1-2.
Freshman Maren Matthias (Guilford, Conn.) led the Wildcats with 16 points. Her sister, junior Anna Matthias had 13 points, while junior Heidi Plencner (Hampton, N.H.) was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 11. Holy Cross's Jeanette Paukert led all scorers with 22 points.
The 'Cats faced a 44-35 deficit at the half. UNH went down 12-6 early but then the Wildcats went on a 10-0 run capped by a Maren Matthias layup to go up 16-12 with 12:38 in the first half. The Crusaders would then go on a 8-0 run. New Hampshire was down 31-24 when Heidi Plencner was fouled on a successful three-point attempt. She would sink the free throw to cut the Holy Cross lead to three. UNH shot 59% in the first half (13-22) but Holy Cross was 6-for-7 from behind the three-point arc.
Holy Cross would quickly push the lead to 17 with 15:31 remaining in the game. From that point, the Wildcats would get no closer the rest of the way.
The Wildcats return to action this Saturday (11/25) when they host intra-state rival Dartmouth College. Game time at Lundholm Gymnasium is 1 p.m.
