CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The University of Miami women’s basketball team utilized a late 11-0 run to fend off the University of New Hampshire in Thursday night’s 70-61 victory in the opening round of the Gatorade Holiday Classic, which is hosted by Miami.
UNH (3-7) will face George Mason University in Friday’s consolation game at 7 p.m. in the Knights Sports Complex. Miami, now 5-4, plays Western Michigan in the title game.
New Hampshire trimmed its deficit to three points with 4:10 remaining, but the Hurricaines secured the win with their 11-point run. The Wildcats had their lone lead of the game – 4-2 with 16:04 to play in the first half – erased with a 14-2 spurt by the home team.
Junior guard Heidi Plencner (Hampton, N.H.) led UNH with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, in 30 minutes off the bench. The ‘Cats also received a strong effort off the bench from freshman center Maren Matthias (Guilford, Conn.), who recorded 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Miami’s top two scorers also came off the bench. Amanda Papuga finished with a game-high 17 points and Dalia Clarke added 14.
The next home game for New Hampshire is Jan. 14 vs. Maine. Game time at the Whittemore Center is noon.
