WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Maren Matthias (Guilford, Conn.), a junior center on the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team, was named to the America East Women's Basketball Championship all-championship team announced after Saturday's conference tournament final.
Matthias, a first-team all-conference selection, recorded 23 points and 12 rebounds in fourth-seeded UNH's 70-57 quarterfinal win over No. 5 Stony Brook Thursday, then followed that up with a 27-point, seven rebound performance as the Wildcats fell to top-ranked Maine 71-65 in Friday's semifinal round. For the tournament, Matthias shot 67.8% (19-28) from the floor, including a 9-11 effort against Maine. She also averaged two blocks and two steals per game for the tournament, and recorded her 1,000th career point in the win over Stony Brook.
A 6-3 center, Matthias wraps up one of the finest seasons in UNH basketball history. She led the squad in scoring (17.5 ppg), rebounding (9.6 rpg), field goal percentage (.557), and blocked shots (46). She was a two-time America East Player of the Week selection and became just the third Wildcat in school history to record 500 points and 250 rebounds in a single season. Matthias recorded double-figures in scoring in 26 of 29 games and closed out the season with four-straight 20-point performances, averaging 24.8 ppg over the final four contests.
The Wildcats wrapped up the season by winning six of their final nine games, finishing in a fourth-place tie in America East. New Hampshire advanced to the conference semifinals for the second-straight season and finished the season with a 13-16 overall record and a 7-9 mark in America East play.
Matthias was joined on the all-championship team by Most Outstanding Player Katie Terhune of Boston University, BU's Larissa Parr and Alison Argentieri and Maine's Heather Ernest.
