ORONO, Maine - Despite 16 points from Whitney Edwards (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and 12 points from Lindsay Adams (Theresa, N.Y.), the New Hampshire Wildcats were unable to complete the season sweep of Maine, losing to the Black Bears, 59-50, Tuesday evening at Alfond Arena.
After taking an early 12-8 lead, the Wildcats gave up a 16-3 run and fell behind 24-15 with over four minutes left in the first half. UNH came back, cutting the Maine advantage to five at 28-23 going into the locker room at halftime.
The Wildcats started the second half by scoring nine unanswered points to retake the lead four minutes into the second half. UNH expanded its lead to 38-31 with 13 minutes remaining in the second half, but Maine's defense solidified, allowing the Black Bears to come from behind for the victory.
Four players scored in double figures for the Black Bears, led by 18 points from Kim Corbitt and 14 points from Monica Peterson. Maine (13-8, 9-2 America East) took advantage of its free throws, making 18-of-22 attempts from the charity stripe (81.8 percent).
Edwards had six rebounds to go along with her season high total for points, while Adams contributed five rebounds and four assists to go along with her third consecutive double-digit scoring game. Danielle Clark (Corinna, Maine), playing in front of friends and family, scored six points and pulled down six rebounds.
New Hampshire (10-10, 6-5 America East) returns to Lundholm Gymnasium and begins a three-game homestand on Saturday, February 12, against the Binghamton Bearcats beginning at 1 p.m.
