SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Candace Williams (Norfolk, Mass.), a junior forward for the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team, was selected to the America East All-Conference Second Team for her impressive performances this season for the Wildcats, as announced by the conference Thursday morning at its annual awards banquet held at the Basketball Hall of Fame.
With the honor, Williams becomes the tenth player in UNH history to be named to the second team and the first to do so since 2006-07, when Danielle Clark was selected to the second team for the second time in her career.
Williams was also honored with the America East Player of the Game award, as she received more Player of the Game Awards than any other player in the conference.
Over the course of the regular season, the junior earned more double-doubles (10) than any other America East player, including five against America East opponents. She was named America East Player of the Week twice (Dec. 15 & Feb. 2).
Williams averaged 16 points per game and a conference-leading 8.2 rebounds per game. The Wildcats leading scorer and rebounder is one of just two players in the conference to be in the top-three in scoring and rebounding.
The forward tallied a career-high 27 points against the America East Champions, Boston University (Jan. 17). She followed that performance with 26 at Stony Brook (Jan. 21). Williams, who was named Player of the Game for the Wildcats 18 times this season, registered 20-plus points in five conference contests, including 22 at Albany (Feb. 28) and Vermont (Feb. 22) and 21 at UMBC (Jan. 10).
Against Morehead State (Dec. 29), Williams pulled down a career-best 16 rebounds. While registering a double-double against Stony Brook (Feb. 25), she also recorded a career-high three blocks.
The forward, who has led the team in scoring in 22 contests this season, has posted double figures in 28 games this year, including 23 straight games to start the season.
Williams and the rest of the Wildcats will face Vermont on Friday, March 13 in an America East quarterfinal match up. The 8 p.m. tip off will take place at the University of Hartford’s Chase Arena.
