DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire women’s basketball head coach Maureen Magarity and her staff recently announced that senior Denise Beliveau (Framingham, Mass.) and sophomore Kelsey Hogan (Nashua, N.H.) have been named team captains for the upcoming 2011-12 season.
“Denise and Kelsey are both the faces of this program,” said Magarity. “They are tremendous leaders who have played through a great deal of adversity during their careers and have been able to move forward with energy and enthusiasm. I think it’s very fitting and well deserved for both of them. They will do an outstanding job with their leadership roles.”
Beliveau, who will serve as a co-captain for the second straight season, will look to cap off an impressive career with another strong campaign this winter. Playing in 28 games, Beliveau led the team in both scoring (12.9) and rebounding (8.9) last season and was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team for her efforts. Beliveau proved to be one of the top players in the conference as she racked-up a league-best 11 double-doubles and finished the season ranked in the top 10 in rebounding (2nd), free throw percentage (5th), 3-point field goals made (7th), scoring (7th) and 3-point field goal percentage (7th) in the America East.
Hogan fought back from consecutive injury-plagued seasons for her first full campaign in 2010-11 and certainly made the most of her time on the court. One of only four Wildcat players to appear in all 29 games, Hogan finished the year averaging 8.2 points and 4.1 assists per game. Hogan, who was named to the America East All-Conference Rookie Team, finished the season with a team-best 118 assists and also led the conference in assists per game (4.1) and 3-point percentage (.429; 42-98).
The Wildcats kick off their season on Friday, Nov. 11 when they visit Brown at 7:30 p.m.
