CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The America East women's basketball quarterfinal game between UNH and Stony Brook on Friday, March 8 has been changed to a 6 p.m. start time at Albany's SEFCU Arena.
The game time was changed because of the University of Maine's withdrawal from the America East Championship. The eighth-seeded Black Bears, who were in a Feb. 26 bus accident en route to Boston, were scheduled to play top-seeded University at Albany in the opening game of Friday's second session (6 p.m.) with UNH vs. Stony Brook following 30 minutes after the conclusion of that game. The quarterfinal matchup between the Wildcats and Seawolves was subsequently moved to 6 p.m. due to the cancellation of the Maine vs. Albany game.
Fans who have already purchased single-session tickets for session two will receive a full refund. Session two tickets for all reserved section seats will now be reduced to $5.
In addition, fans who have already purchased all-session passes will receive a partial refund by calling the Albany ticket office at 518-442-DANE. Those fans also will receive a $10 discount for a future America East Championship event.
UNH (11-17 overall, 6-10 America East) finished in a four-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings with SBU, University of Maryland-Baltimore County and the University of Vermont. UMBC won the tiebreaker to gain the No. 3 seed – the Retrievers are the third seed because Boston University, which finished second in the standings, is ineligible for the America East tourney and thereby all teams below the Terriers advance a seed.
Stony Brook then won the three-way tiebreak between itself, UNH and Vermont to earn the No. 4 seed. UNH held the head-to-head tiebreak advantage vs. UVM to gain the fifth seed.
The Wildcats were swept by Stony Brook in the 2013 regular season with a 48-44 home loss at Lundholm Gym on Jan. 5 and a 60-47 loss at SBU on Feb. 2. New Hampshire has a 17-10 lifetime record vs. the Seawolves and had won five straight in the series prior to this season.
UNH has an 8-28 lifetime record in the conference tournament and that includes 2-1 against the Seawolves, who won in the 2002 semifinals then lost in the 2003 quarterfinals and 2004 first round. The 'Cats have not advanced to the semifinals since 2005.
The 2013 America East Women's Basketball Championship quarterfinals begin March 8 at 12 p.m. when No. 2 seed University of Hartford tips off against seventh-seeded Binghamton University. That game is immediately followed by No. 3 UMBC vs. No. 6 UVM.
The quarterfinal winners advance to the March 10 semifinals (11 a.m. & 1 p.m.) at SEFCU Arena. The March 16 championship game is at the site of the highest remaining seed. Single-session tickets for the 2013 America East Basketball Championship will go on sale Monday, March 4, at 9 a.m. while all-session packages are currently available.
