Ithaca, N.Y. -- Senior forward Carisa Zaban (GIenview, Ill.) of the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team scored a hat trick and added two assists and junior center Michelle Thornton (Gloucester, Ont.) scored her 100th career point as the Wildcats defeated Cornell University 8-3 Saturday night. The Wildcats improve to 12-3-0 overall and 8-3-0 in the ECAC Conference. Cornell falls to 4-8-1 overall and 4-8-1 in conference action.
Zaban pat UNH on the board 1-0 the first period when she beat Cornell goaltender Elizabeth Connelly glove side. Senior forward Kerry Maher (Clifton Park, N.Y.) extended the Wildcat lead 2-0 when she scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway. Junior center Kali Wilson (East Lansing, Mich.) scored her third goal of the season at 15:42 when she put a shot through the legs of Connelly to put the Wildcats ahead 3-0. Freshman forwards Kristine Butt (Pembroke, Mass.) and Annie Fahlenbock (Toronto, Ontario) assisted n the goal. The Wildcats took a 4-0 lead when senior forward Samantha Holmes (Mississauga, Ont.) scored her 19th goal of the season at 19:11.
Cornell opened the second period with a goal by junior forward Erica Olson to cut the lead 4-1. The Wildcats responded at 13:56 when Marybeth Marren (Alton, N.H.) scored her first collegiate goal for a 5-1 UNH lead. Sophomore forward Kelly McManus (Dedham, Mass.) and Maher ssisted on the goal. Cornell responded when Olson and Sarah Olivier cut the lead to 5-3. The Wildcats went up 6-3 at 19:26 on a goal by Zaban.
In the third period, UNH senior forward Tina Carrabba (Billerica, Mass.) scored her seventh goal of the season off rebound to give the Wildcats a 7-3 advantage. Zaban and Holmes assisted on the goal. Zaban scored her third goal of the game on a wraparound shot to put the Wildcats ahead 8-3. Maher and junior center Thornton assisted on the goal. Thornton recorded her 100th career point on the score.
The Wildcats return to action when they host Northeastern University on January 15 at 7 pm.
