New Hampshire women's hockey defeats Boston College, 9-0

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Senior center Michelle Thornton (Gloucester, Ont) recorded her 150th career point to propel the 10th-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s hockey team to Friday night’s 9-0 ECAC victory against Boston College at Kelley Rink.

UNH sophomore goaltender Jen Huggon (Plymouth. Mass.) recorded 14 saves before yielding to Hilary Ensor (Grapevine, Texas) with nine minutes remaining in the game. Ensor was not required to make a save in her collegiate debut.

Thornton, who became the ninth UNH Wildcat to reach the 150-point plateau, attained the milestone at 13:57 of the second period when she broke in alone through the slot and roofed a wrist shot from close range. That tally, the 61st of her career, was set up by Janine Goulet (Gloucester, Ont.) and Nicole Stefanillo (Sanford, Maine) and gave the ‘Cats a 5-0 lead.

Thornton, who finished the game with a goal and three assists, increased her career point total to 152 with a pair of third-period assists.

New Hampshire (13-7-0, 9-4-0 ECAC). which now has a season-best four-game winning streak, quickly netted a 1-0 lead when Marybeth Marren (Alton, N.H.) scored on a slapshot from the left point at 2:28. Thornton set up the tally for her 149th career point.

Goals by Annie Fahlenbock (Toronto, Ont.; 15:00) and Randi Hickox (Mississauga, Ont.; 17:44) gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead after one period. Fahlenbock scored from the slot on a centering pass from Jaime VanMassenhove (Alpena, Mich.; two assists) while Hickox’s shot from the left point found the upper-right corner of the net to produce her first career goal. Kira Misikowetz (Mississauga, Ont.; three assists) and VanMassenhove were credited with assists.

Kristine Butt (Pembroke, Mass.; two goals) extended UNH’s advantage to 4-0 at 6:22 of the second period. Her shot from the right circle went through a screen provided by Thornton and into the net. Allison Edgar (Srigden, Ont.; goal, two assists) earned an assist.

A power-play goal by Kristen Thomas (Wilmington, Mass-: two goals) gave the Wildcats a 6-0 lead at 3:02 of the final frame. Goals by Butt (10:49) and Edgar (11:00) chased BC goalie Amy Coletta (25 saves) from the game. Thomas netted her team-best 13th goal of the season to cap the scoring at 12:09.

The Eagles are now 3-15-0, 1-12-0. Sharon Van Tuyl surrendered one goal and made six saves over the final nine minutes.

New Hampshire returns to action Jan- 14 at Dartmouth College. The game, which begins at 1 p.m., will be broadcast live by WMUR-TV .
