New Hampshire women's ice hockey defeats Findlay, 7-0

FINDLAY, Ohio - Senior co-captain Michelle Thornton (Gloucester, Ontario) netted three goals and assisted on another to lead the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team to Wednesday night's 7-0 victory against the University of Findlay at Clauss Ice Arena.

With the win, UNH now has a 21-2-1 record in season openers. Findlay is 0-4-0 on the season.

Sophomore goaltender Jen Huggon (Plymouth, Mass.) recorded 27 saves for her fourth career shutout. She would get all the offensive support she needed when freshman defenseman Kristen Thomas (Wilmington, Mass.) scored at 8:49 of the first period. She was set up by classmate Deborah Bernhard (Acton, Mass.).

Thornton, playing in her 100th game as a Wildcat, netted her 50th career goal on her first tally of the night. Sophomores Marybeth Marren (Alton, N.H.) and Annie Fahlenbock (Toronto, Ontario) set up the goal, which gave UNH a 2-0 lead at 11:42. Thornton scored 14 seconds later and completed the hat trick in the second stanza. She now has 52 goals and 71 assists for 113 points.

Freshman Janine Goulet (Gloucester, Ontario) potted the first of her two goals at 14:52 of the middle frame. Her other goal, which came from Kristine Butt (Pembroke, Mass.), gave the 'Cats a 6-0 lead at 3:49 of the third period.

Fahlenbock capped the scoring with 13:38 remaining.

Findlay goalie Nickie Kelly made 31 saves.

New Hampshire continues its road swing at Ohio State this Friday and Saturday before playing its Nov. 4 home opener against Dartmouth College. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m.
