New Hampshire women's hockey falls to Northeastern, 4-3

BOSTON - Brooke Whitney scored three goals and assisted on another to lead No. 9 Northeastern University to Saturday afternoon's 4-3 ECAC victory against eighth-ranked University of New Hampshire in women's ice hockey at Matthews Arena.

With New Hampshire (9-3-0, 6-3-0 ECAC) leading 2-1 in the second stanza, Whitney's second tally of the game tied the score 2-2 at 12:52, one second after a Huskies power play expired.

Northeastern took its first lead of the game at 13:40 on Whitney's power play goal, and increased the lead to 4-2 at 16:57.

UNH closed within 4-3 just 48 seconds into the final frame when Kristine Butt (Pembroke, Mass.) found Michelle Thornton (Gloucester, Ontario) alone in the slot. Randi Hickox (Mississauga, Ontario) also set up Thornton's tally.

New Hampshire pulled goalie Jen Huggon (Plymouth, Mass.) with 1:29 remaining in the game. She had to re-enter with 47 seconds to play, then exited again at 19:27, but the 'Cats could not get the game-tying goal.

Huggon finished with 26 saves, while Husky netminder Erika Silva stopped 24 shots.

New Hampshire returns to action Sunday (2 p.m.) at Providence College. The next Wildcat home game is December 15 against Mercyhurst College. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m.
