DURHAM, N.H. -- Steph Jones (Kimberley, B.C.) scored two goals, including the game-winning goal at 4:05 of overtime, to lead the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team to Saturday night's 4-3 win over Ohio State University at the Whittemore Center.
UNH is now 1-1-0 on the season and handed OSU its first loss of the year. The Buckeyes are 2-1-1.
OSU took a 1-0 lead through one period on Jeni Creary's third goal of the weekend and fifth of the season at 10:13. Her goal on the right doorstep was set up by Shana Frost and Jennifer Desson.
UNH took a 2-1 lead in the second period on goals by Annie Fahlenbock (Toronto, Ont.) and Kira Misikowetz (Mississauga, Ont.) at 5:01 and 9:27, respectively. Fahlenbock backhanded in her shot from the slot. Randi MacMaster (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Kristen Thomas (Wilmington, Mass.) set up the tally. Misikowetz put in her own rebound in front of the net with assists going to Carolyn Gordon (Petrolia, Ont.) and MacMaster.
Jeanne Chapple netted a power-play goal at 11:30 to tie the game, 2-2. UNH goaltender Jen Huggon (Plymouth, Mass.; 19 saves) stopped the initial shot by Jennifer Desson but Chapple, alone in front of the net, capitalized on the rebound opportunity. Ohio State regained the lead, 3-2, on an Emma Laaksonen power-play goal at 12:33 of the third period.
