WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- Carolyn Gordon (Petrolia, Ontario), a senior forward and assistant captain on the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team, was named TPS Hockey Player of the Week by Hockey East on Monday and teammate Nicole Hekle (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was honored as ITECH Rookie of the Week.
Gordon, who also received this distinction Feb. 2, recorded six points with three goals and three assists to propel UNH to a home-and-home series sweep of UConn. She had two goals, including the game-winner, and one assist in Friday's 4-1 win, then on Sunday recorded all three of her points (g, 2a) in the second period of a 7-2 road victory. Gordon scored Friday's first-period goals in a span of 22 seconds -- the fastest by UNH this season -- to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead. Her lone tally on Sunday was the 50th of her career as she became the 26th Wildcat to attain that milestone.
Hekle, who was also honored as top rookie Nov. 3, recorded six points with one goal and five assists in UNH's 7-2 victory at UConn on Sunday. Both the assist and point totals are career highs as well as Hockey East single-game records. Hekle recorded an assist on all three of UNH's first-period goals to give the 'Cats a 3-0 lead. She then netted the team's fifth goal in the second period and set up the team's last two tallies.
For the season, Gordon leads the team in both goals (19) and points (33). She is ranked 16th in the nation in goals-per-game (0.66) as well as 25th in points-per-game (1.14) and 13th in power-play goals (six). Hekle is one of the other two Wildcats who has recorded double digits in both goals and assists with 10 tallies and 12 helpers. She is currently 14th nationally among rookies at 0.76 ppg and is tied with Gordon at No. 13 in power-play goals.
New Hampshire (17-8-4 overall, 12-1-2 Hockey East) returns to action Feb. 28 (2 p.m.) at Providence College. The next Wildcat home game is Feb. 29 vs. Providence. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 2 p.m.
