Nicole Heckle

WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- Nicole Hekle (Winnipeg, Manitoba), a sophomore forward on the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team, was named the 2004-05 inaugural recipient of the Player of the Week award, Hockey East announced Monday afternoon.

Hekle, one of three Wildcats to record a point in all three games last week, led UNH in both assists (four) and points (five) last week to propel the Wildcats to a 3-0-0 week. She set up both game-winning goals vs. Niagara, including one in the 4-3 overtime victory Oct. 16. Hekle had two assists in the season opener at Vermont (5-0 win) and her lone goal of the week gave the 'Cats a 2-1 second-period lead Saturday vs. the Purple Eagles. Her other assist came in Friday's 4-1 win against Niagara.

Hekle, a 2004 Hockey East All-Rookie Team selection, has 13 goals and 19 assists for 32 points in 39 career games. Last year, she ranked 13th in the nation among rookies in scoring (0.75 points per game) and 16th in power-play goals with six. Her season highlights included breaking the Hockey East league single-game point record with six (1-5-6) at the University of Connecticut on Feb. 22, and the five assists tied the league single-game record.

UNH (3-0-0) returns to action Oct. 22 at home for its Hockey East opener against UConn. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m.
