Bourdon named Defensive Player of the Week
Zerafa tabbed ITECH Rookie of the Week
WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- Melissa Bourdon (Ile Bizard, Quebec) and Jessica Zerafa (Mississauga, Ontario) of the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team were named Defender of the Week and ITECH Rookie of the Week by Hockey East on Monday.
The duo helped UNH extend its season-opening winning streak to five games with last week's Hockey East victories against the University of Connecticut (4-0 at home) and Boston College (6-1 on the road).
Bourdon, a five-time Hockey East Rookie of the Week selection a year ago, went 2-0-0 last week with a 0.50 goals-against-average, .962 save percentage and one shutout. She stopped all 12 shots in the 4-0 win against UConn for her second shutout of the season (ninth of her career) and turned aside 13 of 14 shots against BC. The only goal she allowed was when the Wildcats were shorthanded in a 5x3 situation for 53 seconds.
Zerafa recorded career highs in goals (two) and points (three) to propel UNH to victory against BC. Her first tally of the game gave the 'Cats a 2-0 lead and proved to be the game-winning goal. She also recorded her first career assist in the third period.
Through five games this season, Bourdon is 5-0-0 with a 0.99 GAA, .931 save percentage and two shutouts. Zerafa is tied for the team lead in goals with three and has a team-best plus/minus rating of +6. She also has one assist for a total of four points.
UNH (5-0-0 overall, 2-0-0 Hockey East) returns to action Oct. 31 at home against Brown University. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 2 p.m.
