Hansen, Hitchcock, Hekle record two points apiece
HANOVER, N.H. - Captains Lindsay Hansen (Northport, N.Y.) and Nicole Hekle (Winnipeg, Manitoba), as well as Jennifer Hitchcock (LaSalle, Ontario), recorded two points apiece to propel the second-ranked University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team to Sunday afternoon's 4-1 non-conference victory against Dartmouth College at Thompson Arena.
UNH, which had been idle since its 3-0 victory at then-No. 9 Harvard University on Dec. 10, extended its winning streak to eight games to improve to 13-2-0 overall. Dartmouth, which had won each of the last five games and six consecutive home games in the series vs. the Wildcats, is now 5-7-0.
Hansen and Hitchcock both recorded a goal and an assist while Hekle finished with two assists. UNH goaltender Melissa Bourdon (Ile Bizard, Quebec) recorded a season-high 19 saves, including eight in the third period. DC goalie Kate Lane was forced to record double digits in saves all three stanzas - 15-12-16 - to finish with 43.
The teams skated to a 1-1 tie through one period. UNH took a 1-0 lead - the 'Cats have scored the game's first goal in 14 of 15 games this season - at 10:57 on Hitchcock's eighth goal of the season on a shot from the slot. Sadie Wright-Ward (Durham, N.H.) and Sam Faber (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) were credited with assists.
Dartmouth pulled even at 15:49 when UNH lost control of the puck at the left point. Danielle Grundy gathered the loose puck and her shot was stopped by Bourdon, but Caroline Ethier scored off the rebound at the top of the crease. It marked only the second first-period goal the Wildcats have surrendered this year.
New Hampshire regained the lead, 2-1, at 10:21 of the second period. Senior defenseman Amy McLaughlin (Berlin, Mass.), who recorded six points in seven games vs. DC while skating for Brown University, capped a UNH flurry with a shot from the left point in her first meeting vs. the Big Green as a Wildcat. Hansen, with a pass from the left corner, and Hekle set up the tally.
The 'Cats recorded a 29-12 shot advantage through 40 minutes and pulled away in the scoring column in the third. Shannon Clement (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) increased the advantage to 3-1 at 2:20 when her shot from the left circle caromed off Lane and trickled into the net. Lindsey Caleo (Clinton Township, Mich.) initiated the scoring sequence by skaing the puck through the neutral zone along the left dashers and passing off to Clement.
UNH scored a power-play goal at 9:33 to finish the scoring. From the right circle, Hitchcock made a centering pass to Hekle, and she redirected the puck to the right post, where Hansen scored.
New Hampshire returns to action at home Jan. 4 vs. Colgate University. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m.
