WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- Nicole Hekle (Winnipeg, Manitoba), a junior forward and tri-captain on the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team, was named Hockey East Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Hekle, the 2005 Hockey East Scoring Champion, recorded her first career hat trick as well as two assists to lead UNH to an 8-2 league victory against Northeastern University at Matthews Arena on Nov. 19. The three goals, which included the game-winner on a shorthanded tally in the second period, marked a single-game personal best for Hekle. She also had a plus/minus rating of +5 vs. the Huskies and factored into all three Wildcat third-period goals with one tally and two assists.
Hekle leads the Wildcats in both points (15) and assists (10) this season. She is also among the team leaders in goals (fourth; five), shooting percentage (second; .185) and plus/minus (first; +9). On the national leaderboard, Hekle is No. 3 in points per game (1.67) and No. 4 in assists per game (1.11). Her efforts have led UNH to the No. 1 national ranking in both offense (4.89 gpg) and power play (33.9%).
In 80 career games, Hekle has amassed 36 goals and 58 assists for 94 points. She is on the verge of becoming the 34th UNH Wildcat to record 100 career points.
UNH returns to action Nov. 22 at home against Northeastern University. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m.
