WAKEFIELD, Mass.  – The fourth-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team will face off against University of Connecticut in the first game of the 2007 Women’s Hockey East Championships, which will be held March 3-4 at UNH’s Whittemore Center. The UNH vs. UConn semifinal begins at noon and the second semifinal between eighth-ranked Boston College and Providence College is scheduled to follow at 3 p.m.

UNH (26-3-5) earned the No. 1 seed in the Women’s Hockey East Championship with a 18-1-2 league record for 38 points. UConn (17-14-3), which fell out of the national polls this week following last weekend’s pair of losses to Providence, finished the regular season with a 12-7-2 league record for 26 points.

UNH has a 21-3-3 lifetime record (2-0-1 this season) vs. the Huskies and that includes 1-1 in postseason play. UConn ousted the Wildcats from the 2005 Women’s Hockey East Championships in a semifinal game at Boston University’s Walter Brown Arena.

BC (23-8-2) finished second in the Hockey East standings for the second time in as many years with a 15-6-0 league mark. Providence (15-15-4), jumped into third place in the final standings with last weekend’s sweep of UConn and went 12-6-3 in league play. The Eagles won the season series, 2-1-0, that included a BC sweep of a home-and-home series Feb. 17-18.

The semifinal winners will face off in the March 4 championship game at the Whittemore Center. The game, which will be broadcast live by NESN, begins as 12:30 p.m. The Hockey East Championship titlist receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Championships.

All UNH games will be broadcast live on the UNH Sports Network.
