WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Sam Faber (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.), a sophomore forward on the second-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team, was named Player of the Week by Hockey East on Monday.
Faber recorded three points with two goals, including Saturday’s game-winning tally in overtime, and an assist to propel UNH to a weekend series sweep of Niagara University. She recorded an assist on the team’s last goal in Friday’s 5-0 win, then netted two scores in the 4-3 overtime victory. Faber’s first tally of the season gave the ‘Cats a 3-2 lead midway through the second period, and she scored the decisive goal by maneuvering through the defense and lifting the puck under the crossbar at 2:25 of the extra session.
Faber’s 2006 honors included Hockey East ITECH Rookie of the Year, All-USCHO Rookie Team, Hockey East Pure Hockey Tournament MVP and five-time selection as the league’s Rookie of the Week.
In 39 career games, Faber has 24 goals and 30 assists for 54 points.
New Hampshire (2-0-0) returns to action this weekend at the University of Minnesota. The Wildcats play Bemidji State on Oct. 6 (5 p.m. Eastern) and Minnesota on Oct. 7 (8 p.m. Eastern). The next UNH home game is Oct. 20 (7 p.m.) vs. Brown.
