ORONO, Maine
  – Nicole Hekle (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Sadie Wright-Ward (Durham, N.H.) recorded two points apiece and Melissa Bourdon (Ile Bizard, Quebec) stopped 12 shots for her 23rd career shutout to lead the No. 2-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team to Saturday afternoon’s 4-0 Hockey East victory against the University of Maine at Alfond Arena.
UNH, now 5-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in Hockey East, extended its regular-season unbeaten streak to 31 games (30-0-1) with its 19th consecutive win in regular season play. Maine, ousted from the 2006 Hockey East tournament by the Wildcats (6-0 in the semifinals), fell to 1-4-0, 0-1-0.
Hekle (goal, assist) gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at 1:18 of the first period on her first tally of the season. Leah Craig (Seaforth, Ontario) was credited with an assist on that game-winning tally.
UNH took that one-goal advantage into the second period and Micaela Long (South Boston, Mass.), with the assistance of Hekle and Kelly Paton (Woodstock, Ontario), netted a power-play goal at 14:13 to give the ‘Cats a 2-0 lead.
Sam Faber (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season with a power-play goal at 13:04 of the third period. Jennifer Hitchcock (LaSalle, Ontario) and Wright-Ward set up the tally.
Martine Garland (Toronto, Ontario) scored 3:12 later to close the scoring. Wright-Ward was credited with her team-leading sixth assist of the season on the tally.
Bourdon recorded five saves in each of the first two periods, and two in the third for her second shutout of the season. Her career total of 23 is second only to 2003 All-America selection Jen Huggon, who finished with 26, on UNH’s all-time list.
Maine goalie Genevieve Turgeon stopped 32 shots, including 13 in the middle stanza.
New Hampshire returns to action Oct. 20 at home vs. Brown University. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m.
