WAKEFIELD, Mass.  – Kayley Herman (Weyburn, Saskatchewan), a freshman goaltender on the second-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team, was named Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week by Hockey East on Monday.

Herman backboned UNH to a weekend sweep of Providence College (3-0 on the road; 3-1 at home) by stopping 43 of 44 shots for a 0.50 GAA and .977 save percentage. She made a career-high 27 saves to record her second consecutive shutout (sixth of the season) in the 3-0 win that clinched the Wildcats’ third straight outright Hockey East regular-season championship. The only goal Herman surrendered was during a PC 5x3 power play, and that tally ended her shutout streak at 157 minutes, 12 seconds.

In 28 games (27 starts) this season, the rookie goalie has a 24-2-1 overall record with a 1.08 GAA and .938 save percentage. Herman ranks third nationally in GAA as well as fifth in save percentage and second in wins; all three marks are best in Hockey East. The 1.08 GAA would break UNH’s single-season record of 1.18 currently held by Melissa Bourdon (2006 season).

Herman is a four-time Hockey East Mission Rookie of the Week recipient. She has also been feted as ITECH Goaltender of the
