WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- Jenn Wakefield (Pickering, Ontario), a sophomore forward on the fifth-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team, was named TPS Hockey Player of the Week by Hockey East on Monday. It marked Wakefield’s third such honor this season; she was previously recognized Jan. 19 and Oct. 13.
Wakefield led UNH to three victories against nationally-ranked teams last week with seven points on four goals and three assists. She scored both game-winning goals in the home-and-home sweep of 10th-ranked University of Connecticut and set up the game-winning goal at ninth-ranked Harvard University. Her other stats for the week included a .333 shooting percentage (4g/12sh).
Wakefield opened the week with a goal and an assist at Harvard on Feb. 17; her shorthanded tally gave the ‘Cats a 2-0 lead in the second period and she set up the game-winning goal with 39 seconds remaining in overtime.
She duplicated that point effort at UConn on Feb. 21, and her goal broke a 3-3 tie with 92 seconds remaining in regulation and gave UNH the Hockey East regular-season title outright. Wakefield concluded the week with two goals and an assist vs. the Huskies; she set up the tally that gave UNH a 1-0 lead late in the second period, then scored goals at 2:57 and 6:59 of the third to extend the advantage to 4-0.
Wakefield leads the nation in both power-play (13) and game-winning (nine) goals. She ranks third nationally in goals per game (1.07) as well as second in shorthanded goals (four) and 12th in points per game (1.63). Wakefield is the UNH leader in goals (32), power-play goals, shorthanded goals, game-winning goals, points and shots. She is also second in shooting percentage (.179) and fourth in plus/minus (+17).
