BELLAMY AND FABER NAMED TO U.S. WOMEN'S U-22 SELECT TEAM

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.Kacey Bellamy (Westfield, Mass.) and Sam Faber (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.), both of whom will be seniors on the 2008-09 University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team, were named to the U.S. Women’s Under-22 Select Team, USA Hockey announced Thursday. Both Bellamy and Faber were on last year’s U.S. Under-22 Select Team and the U.S. Women’s National Team, which captured gold at the 2008 IIHF World Championship.

Bellamy, Faber and the other 20 members of this year’s team will participate in both the 2008 USA Hockey Women's National Festival in Lake Placid, N.Y., and the 2008 Under-22 Series against Canada in Pierrefonds, Quebec, in August. Bellamy was selected from the 33 participants at the USA Hockey Women’s Under-22 Camp, which also included fellow Wildcat Maggie Joyce (Hudson, Ohio), that was held June 24 through July 1. Faber, who was unable to attend that camp, was one of five other players under consideration for selection to this year’s U-22 team.

Bellamy is the only defenseman of the seven on the U.S. roster who was also a member of the 2007 U-22 squad. With 23 assists, Bellamy had one less than the team leaders. She led UNH’s defensemen in goals (three), assists and points (26), and she also had a plus/minus rating of +30 to rank fifth overall. Bellamy ranked No. 23 in the nation in assists (0.66 apg) and No. 10 in defenseman scoring (0.74 ppg). Bellamy’s other 2008 honors included Hockey East Second-Team All-Star and New England All-Star.

SAM FABER

Faber, one of 13 forwards on the U.S. team, led UNH in both assists (24) and points (49) for the second consecutive year in 2008; she also led the ‘Cats in plus/minus (+41), game-winning goals (13) and shorthanded goals (three); furthermore, Faber ranked second in goals (25) as well as third in shooting percentage (.192). Faber led the nation in game-winning goals and was second in shorthanded goals, 10th in goals (0.66 gpg) and 13th in points (1.29 ppg). Faber’s 2008 Hockey East accolades included Tournament MVP, First-Team All-Star and TPS Hockey Player of the Month (November and December); she was also honored as a New England All-Star.

The duo helped lead New Hampshire (33-4-1) to its fifth consecutive Hockey East regular-season title and third straight league tournament championship in 2008. The Wildcats also advanced to the Frozen Four for the second time in three years.

The U.S. Women's Under-22 Select Team will participate in the USA Hockey Women's National Festival in Lake Placid starting Aug. 12. The team will depart for Pierrefonds, Quebec, on Aug. 18 for the Under-22 Series from Aug. 20-23.
