WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Jenn Wakefield (Pickering, Ontario), a sophomore forward on the fourth-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team, was selected as Pure Hockey Player of the Week by Hockey East on Monday.
Wakefield recorded three goals and four assists for a total of seven points to help UNH to a 2-0-1 week. She also had a +5 rating on the week and led the Wildcats with 21 shots.
Wakefield tallied two goals, including the game-winner, and two assists to match her career highs in goals, assists and points Oct. 11 at Niagara; she recorded a point on each of the team’s first four tallies in that 5-3 win and recorded her 50th career point with the third of her four points.
Wakefield followed that with a multiple-point effort (1g, 1a) vs. the Purple Eagles in which she had the primary assist on the game-winning goal of the 5-2 victory.
In the season opener against 10th-ranked Boston College on Oct. 8, Wakefield lifted UNH into a 2-2 tie with the primary assist on the game-tying goal that sent the game into OT and subsequent shootout win for the Wildcats.
This is Wakefield’s first Player of the Week award. The 2008 Hockey East Scoring Champion and Rookie of the Year was a four-time Mission Rookie of the Week selection and two-time Rookie of the Month honoree last season.
In 36 career games, Wakefield has compiled 30 goals and 23 assists for 53 points.
New Hampshire (2-0-1, 1-0-0 Hockey East) returns to action Oct. 15 (7 p.m.) at the University of Connecticut. The Wildcats play at home next weekend against both St. Lawrence University (Oct. 18; 2 p.m.) and Clarkson University (Oct. 19; 12 p.m.).
