BOSTON, Mass. - The University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team, which has avanced to the America East Championships each of the previous three years by finishing among the top four in the conference, was voted fifth in the 2001 Preseason Women's Lacrosse Poll that was released Wednesday.
UNH, which finished fourth in the conference last season at 3-3 and ended the year at 7-10, garnered 24 points to finish behind defending champion Boston University (47 points), University of Delaware (39), Hofstra University (38) and Towson University (26). Drexel (14) and Vermont (8) complete the poll.
Senior midfielder Colleen Christopher (Newington, N.H.) is a conference Player of the Year candidate who sets the tone for the Wildcats. Christopher, a 2000 regional All-American, had a breakout season last year when she led the team and America East in goals at 2.59 per game. She also ranked sixth in the league in scoring at 2.65 points per game (44-1-45).
New Hampshire opens the season March 4 at Dartmouth College. Game time is 1 p.m. The home opener at Memorial Field is scheduled for March 18 (1 p.m.) against Massachusetts.
