HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Kathleen McPike scored six goals and assisted on another to lead the 16th-ranked Hofstra University women's lacrosse team to Friday afternoon's 16-5 America East victory against the University of New Hampshire at Hofstra Stadium.
New Hampshire, which ends the regular season at 11-6 overall and 3-3 in America East, will be the fourth seed in the America East Championships held May 5-6 at the site of the highest seed. There will be a rematch between UNH and Hofstra (13-2, 5-0) in the semifinals if the Pride defeat Boston University on Sunday.
Senior assistant captain Colleen Christopher (Newington, N.H.) became just the fifth UNH Wildcat to reach the 150-point plateau with the first of her two goals in the game, which tied the score, 2-2, at 16:01 of the first half. With the two points in the game, she also broke the school single-season points record of 64 set by Karen Geromini in 1984. Christopher currently has 65 points this season and career numbers of 136 goals and 15 assists for 151 points.
UNH trailed just 5-3 at halftime, but Hofstra opened the second half with five goals in seven minutes to build a 10-3 advantage. Sue Yund (Castleton, N.Y.) trimmed the margin to 10-4 at 22:40. Kathleen Mikowski (four goals, assist) struck 16 seconds later, but then only another 16 seconds passed before Christopher made it 11-5 at 22:08.
The Wildcats were blanked the rest of the way, however, and the Pride steadily pulled away.
Jessie Groszkowski (Reisterstown, Md.) gave UNH a 1-0 lead at 26:16 of the first half. Hofstra took a 2-1 lead over the next six minutes before Christopher and Christine Anneberg (Denver, Colo.) potted goals 10 seconds apart to put the 'Cats back on top, 3-2. The Pride netted the final three goals of the half to establish a 5-3 lead at the break.
